We often hear people talk about multitasking as if it’s a superpower we should all strive for. But here’s the truth: multitasking doesn’t actually exist! (Yes, read that again.) What we’re really doing is “task-switching” - shifting our focus rapidly between different tasks. And this constant switching comes with a cost: decreased productivity, scattered focus, and drained energy.
The Busy Trap
I used to fall into the “busy” trap myself. My calendar was packed, and I was juggling multiple tasks at once. I thought staying busy was part of my success - it made me feel relevant, in demand, and even important. But over time, I realized that this busyness was actually working against me.
Instead of feeling accomplished, I felt scattered and drained. Tasks that needed my full attention were competing with less important ones, and I wasn’t truly excelling at anything.
Why Multitasking Doesn’t Work
The truth is, being busy often makes us less productive. Here’s what the research says:
Every time we switch tasks, we lose about 25% more time than if we’d focused on one task at a time.
It takes about 15 minutes to fully regain focus after an interruption, whether it’s a phone buzz or an email ping.
Mistakes are more likely when we’re trying to do multiple things at once.
Multitasking feels productive, but it’s actually slowing us down.
The Power of Single-Tasking
When we focus on one task at a time, we’re more productive, effective, and fulfilled. This shift requires some adjustments, but the results are worth it. I no longer feel pulled in a hundred directions, and my work feels more focused and impactful.
Here are five ways to leave multitasking behind and embrace real focus:
1. Prioritize Single-Tasking
Each day, identify your top-priority tasks and commit to working on them one at a time. Block out distractions and allow yourself to be fully present with each task.
2. Create Focus Blocks
Set specific periods of time to work without interruptions. Turn off notifications, close non-essential tabs, and let others know you’re in a “focus block.” Even using 25-minute intervals with 5-minute breaks (like the Pomodoro Technique) can help you stay on track.
3. Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness builds your brain’s ability to focus and avoid distractions. Try the “5-5-5” grounding exercise:
Pause and take a deep breath.
Notice 5 things you can see around you.
Acknowledge 5 things you can hear, like your breathing or distant sounds.
Sense 5 things you can feel, such as the texture of your chair or the air temperature.
This simple exercise brings you back to the present and helps your brain reset.
4. Recognize “Busy Work”
Start noticing when you’re filling time with unimportant tasks, like answering non-urgent emails or scrolling your phone. Recognizing busy work allows you to gently redirect your energy to what truly matters.
5. Redefine Success
Stop measuring success by how much you get done in a day. Instead, focus on how deeply you engage with the tasks that matter most. Completing one task fully and with care is far more fulfilling than juggling several and finishing none.
