A Moment to Breathe, Reflect, and Feel

Being present with family.

Today, I want to share something meaningful - a memory that still stirs something deep within me. It’s a photo from the last big eclipse, taken just before my brain surgery. That day, I sat with my kids, watching the sky transform, and felt a mix of gratitude, awe, and peace. At that moment, I thought I already understood what it meant to truly appreciate life. But going through brain surgery? That gave me an entirely new perspective on presence.

Finding Meaning in the Ordinary

Sometimes it takes a major life event to remind us how precious every moment is - the joyful ones, the tough ones, and even the ones that seem ordinary. When I look at that photo, I smile. It captured something simple yet profound: a memory of presence, a glimpse of what truly matters when life slows down and we allow ourselves to see it.

Here’s the thing: you don’t have to wait for a life-changing moment to start appreciating the beauty of now.

The Power of Presence

Neuroscience shows that our minds thrive when we pause to reflect on what truly matters. When we take stock of life’s little moments - those we might otherwise overlook - it grounds us. Gratitude doesn’t just feel good; it rewires our brains for resilience and joy.

Let’s Practice Presence Together

Wherever you are right now, take a moment to experience this with me.

  1. Sit Comfortably: Close your eyes if it feels right. Let your shoulders relax and take a deep, slow breath. Inhale for a count of four… pause… and exhale for six.

  2. Recall a Moment of Joy: Think of a time that made you feel truly alive - a sunrise, laughter with a loved one, or even the warmth of a cozy morning. Picture it vividly. What did it look like? Sound like? Feel like?

  3. Feel the Gratitude: Notice the sensations this memory brings. Perhaps it’s warmth in your chest, a soft smile, or a sense of calm. This feeling is your brain releasing dopamine and serotonin - those little neurochemicals of happiness and balance.

  4. Breathe Deeply: Take two more breaths, savoring this moment of gratitude. Notice how this simple exercise shifts something within you - a reminder of your strength, beauty, and resilience.

A Simple Practice with Big Impact

This quick practice is like a mini vacation for your mind. Just a minute or two each day can help you access calm and focus, no matter what’s happening around you. It’s a way to bring presence and meaning into even the busiest of days. Breathe, reflect, and feel.

What Did You Feel?
